election debate programs attended by party leaders in Turkey is not a very usual situation. We can talk about four discussion programs that have been in memory since the 1983 elections. Some of these debates affected the election results, while others treated voters as if they had never happened.
After the junta of September 12, the first elections took place on 6 November 1983. After the junta's candidate and party bans, ANAP, the People's Party and Kenan Evren supported MDP. The leaders of the three parties met in a debate program organized by TRT before the election. In the program, ANAP leader Turgut Özal came forward with his liberal ideas. This was expected. The surprise of the program and the election was followed by the People's Party. HP leader Necdet Calp opposed Özal's statement that he would sell the Bosphorus Bridge, saying “I wouldn't have it sold out ve, and despite all candidate vetoes, his party was elected second with 30 percent of the vote. The program, in which MDP President Turgut Sunalp gave a very faint appearance, was also a clue to the election results. Sunalp, despite all the support of the junta only 23 percent of the vote.
We can say that the most democratic debate program among the leaders took place on 11 October 1991. DYP leader Süleyman Demirel, ANAP leader Mesut Yılmaz, SHP President Erdal İnönü, DSP President Bülent Ecevit, RP leader Necmettin Erbakan and SP President Doğru Perinçek participated in the elections. Bülent Ecevit came to the fore as the most successful name after the program, where all the leaders used the same time. Demirel, İnönü and Mesut Yılmaz showed a mediocre performance, while Perinçek and Erbakan became successful leaders. The prominent names in the debate program were not successful in the ballot box. In the election held on October 20, 1991, the ranking continued in the form of DYP, ANAP and SHP, while RP managed to gain 16 percent of the vote with an alliance with MÇP (Alparslan Türkeş) and IDP (Aykut Edipali). Perincek could not enter the percentage tranche again as the DSP dam passed almost.
The 1995 elections took place with the center-right leadership race. ANAP and TPP only deal with each other during almost the entire election. Tansu Ciller and Mesut Yilmaz Ali Kirca under the leadership of the discussion program was among the unforgettable. There was no winner of the program, which was quite harsh. However, they severely battered each other. As a result of the election, ANAP and DYP got 19 percent and RP got away with 21 percent and became the winner.
After the coalition, which lasted for about 7 years, the program before the 3 November 2002 elections, in which single-party rule would begin, took place between AKP leader Erdogan and CHP leader Baykal. Baykal's CHP and the Virtue Party, which remained outside the coalitions, were seen as the strongest candidates in the elections. That is why Erdogan and Baykal were called to the program. It was understood after the election results that the project designers had a vision. MHP, DYP and the Young Party were under the threshold due to a few thousand votes missing, and the AKP was the ruling party with 34 percent of the vote.
As for the program; both leaders were cautious. They had an image that knew the election results and didn't want it to change, so they were afraid to make mistakes. The program ended without treading on each other's feet. The political lives of the two after the program passed by supporting each other.
It is not possible to say that the programs that lock millions on the screens change the destiny of the elections. Undoubtedly had an effect. The most prominent of these is the People's Party of Necdet Calp. During the propaganda period, which continued silently during the banned period, 30 percent of the voters were able to take a vote. It is hard to say that the winner of the Çiller-Yılmaz duel, which was very worn down by each other, was RP leader Necmettin Erbakan.
A similar debate took place in the US elections. The bright, ready-to-answer was almost evident in the controversy between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, who even had trouble making long sentences. The majority of television viewers thought Clinton was better. Sonuç Trump wasn't too bad, and he could be the president of the United States, bir another conclusion was. This perception enabled desperate conservatives to go to the polls.
A similar result can be experienced tonight. A mediocre debate and the winner's uncertainty will undoubtedly help Binali Yıldırım. The debate is a continuation of the 15-day campaign “Without Erdogan, Binali Yildirim will succeed”. Imamoglu had to star, while Yildirim will not fall under the mediocre performance will be enough. Binali Yildirim should not have any problems in achieving this much in the program where there will be common questions and very few polemics.
